Cynthia (Phillips) Miller** (’84 home ec. ed.) was selected as one of the 2007 top eight National Teachers of the Year for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She currently lives in Windsor, Colo., where she teaches family and consumer sciences at Windsor High School.

Clyde Tiffany** (’83 ag. mechanism/ agron.) writes: “I still relish my college days, but it is bittersweet since I lost my college sweetheart, Nancy Ellen (Meyer) Tiffancy** (’83 journalism), my wife of 18 years, to an accident on Aug. 1, 2002. I remarried in February of 2006 to Annette Tiffany. Our combined family of six children is doing well. We have two boys in college, two girls in high school, and two boys in middle school. There is still hope for the younger kids to attend ISU. I continue to work for Pioneer Hi-Bred in central Minnesota and will always cheer for the Cyclones. Go, ISU!” Clyde lives in Spicer, Minn.

Allison (Engel) Kirkpatrick** (’73 home ec. journalism) has been named the new director of communications at the University of Southern California, where she is also a candidate for an MFA in screenwriting. Allison lives in Indian Wells, Calif.

Scott Kirkpatrick** (’71 indus. admin., ’74 animal sci.) has been named the head golf professional at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., which hosts the PGA Qualifying School and the Bob Hope Desert Classic, among other tournaments. He completed the PGA Class A professional program in 2006, winning the Acushnet Company award for the top apprentice test scores in southern California. Scott lives in Indian Wells, Calif.

Helen (McHugh) Brauer** (’65 Ph.D. econ.), dean and professor emeritus, Colorado State University, was honored with the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences’ (AAFCS) most prestigious national award, the AAFCS Distinguished Service Award, at its recent 98th annual conference and Expo in Reno, Nev. Helen was recognized for her more than 40 years of leadership and many other outstanding contributions to the family and consumer sciences profession. Helen lives in Ft. Collins, Colo.

Erika (Westphal) Visser** (’46 dietet.) writes, “I’m still around. I live alone, but am close to our oldest son. He is a surgeon at Carolina Medical Hospital. He and his wife have three little girls. They live on Lake Norman, and we spend a lot of time together. (He is also an ISC alumnus). Would love to hear from any Iowa State friends!” Erika lives in Cornelius, N.C.

Lloyd G. Mumford* (’42 elec. engr.) writes, “I am 87 years old and still active. I would like to visit the campus but do not drive long distances anymore – only in town and slightly larger cities such as Evansville, Indiana. I enjoy reading VISIONS and finding out what is going on at the campus. Lloyd lives in Owensboro, Ky.

Rosemary (Wiese) Wilson** (’74 el. ed.) writes: “In May 2007, I retired from teaching as a fourth grade teacher at Collins-Maxwell Schools after 31 years!” Rosemary lives in Nevada, Iowa.

Harlan Hanson* (’69 elec. engr.) retired from Rockwell Collins on April 27, 2007, after 38 years of service. Harlan lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Grant Langdon* (’62 farm op.) has published a book called “Scandal in the Courtroom, Found Guilty without Trial.” The Web site is www.grantlangdon.com. As Farm Bureau president, Grant hosted the local agronomy farm and proposed a law to protect dairy farm income. Grant lives in Cincinnati, Ohio

Burton Butler** (’60 animal sci.) has retired from Kirkwood Community College as a professor in equine science. Presently, Burton travels the country and foreign countries as a horse judge and does horse appraisal work. Burton lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

David Vanek** (’59 forestry) closed his general surgery/vascular/trauma practice in 2005. David now works as a surgeon four to five months per year. His children, Matthew and Lilly, both are in college, enjoying the pursuit of business and nutrition majors while playing football and running track. He and his wife, Gretchen, will be spending six months a year in Nicaragua and six months in Idaho. Time for hiking, camping, and fishing has grown exponentially for the couple. David has great thoughts of Iowa State, many friends, and he still follows the Cyclones.

Manuel Mateos** (’58 MS civil engr., ’61 PhD) writes: “The book number 11 of my series on water hydraulics is already printed. The 150 audits on the traffic safety can be consulted on my Web site, www.manuelmateos.info. My book in English, ‘Feelings,’ is also on my Web site. Manuel lives in Madrid, Spain.

Beryl (White) Johnson** (’47 home ec. ed.) writes: “Kenyon Place Independent Living area of Friendship haven, Fort Dodge, Iowa, was the scene of the 60th anniversary of six 1947 graduates of Iowa State College on June 22, 2007. Seven 1947 graduates started a round-robin letter and have continued it these 60 years, meeting with each other at one of their homes each year in either Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, or Florida. One member, Lucretia (Kirby) Gould (’47 home ec. ed) died in 1990, leaving six members to continue on the tradition. This year they were hosted in Kenyon Place, where they ate together in the Hearth Dining room before touring the facility and visiting in Marvin and Beryl Johnson’s apartment. Martha (May) Beeh* (’48 home ec. ed.) joined the group in the afternoon. After reminiscing and looking at pictures they all left planning to continue the letters and get together. David Lush** (’45 mech. engr.) writes: “Got married in my longtime hometown of Annecy (Alps, just below Geneva) after 9 years widowhood. Honeymooned at Stanford (got JD in ’49), on Maui, in Los Angeles and Yosemite (three season as a Ranger) with sister, Mary Elizabeth (Lush) Hausrath* (’46 food sci.) and brother-in-law, Al Hausrath* (’47 engr.). ‘Mel’ has a Cornell master’s and Al has an ISU master’s and Illinois Ph.D. My wife was the CEO of the St. Regis Hotel in Paris in the 80s and still runs a major film studio at the Cannes Film Festival. We have each two boys and a girl, and I have five grandchildren. Main interests are golf, bridge, Rotary, and gardening in the 340 days of sunshine of the Riviera. David lives in Cannes, France.

Janet (Dieken) Jackson** (’42 applied art) writes: “While attending Iowa State College, I worked 20 hours per week. One Christmas vacation, I paged through the housing record books from the beginning of Iowa State College and wrote a history of housing for Madge McGlade. One summer I typed and edited a horticulture textbook for Richey and Schilletter, and another time I illustrated their laboratory book for the same course. A number of years I assisted in Wallace Barron’s alumni office, and one year I assisted in Harold Pride’s Memorial Union office. What a great experience.” Janet lives in Redlands, Calif.

Mary Jane (Pauley) Cox Campbell** (’40 txt/clo.) and husband, Robert E. Campbell** (’40 chem. engr.) moved from Belmond, Iowa in December 2006 to a senior living apartment complex in Edina, Minn. The Campbells have been married for 21 years after both losing their spouses. Mary Jane and Robert have been lifelong friends and ran into each other at their 45th college reunion. Soon after renewing their acquaintance, they were married. At age 89, they are content to be in their new apartment near Mary Jane’s daughter, Dr. Martha Cox ‘83.

Rachelle (Schoessler) Lynn* (’90 interior dsn.) writes: “I am excited to announce the launch of “Studio 2030”, an architecture, interior design, and urban planning studio, based in Minneapolis, Minn. The founding partners are Rachelle Schoessler Lynn, ASID, LEED AP, and David Loehr, AIA, LEED AP. Our firm is an integrated design practice merging the art and science of architecture with the values of social and ecological responsibility. www.studio2030.com “ Rachelle added that she had the honor of participating in a national ad campaign for ASID (American Society of Interior Designers). The ads can be found in magazines such as Metropolis, Dwell, and Interior Design.

Donald Jakielski** (’89 ed. Indus. tech.) was promoted on Aug. 1, 2007 to the position of chief operating officer for region one for the Housing Authority of Joliet. Donald’s responsibilities include the management and operation of four housing developments for low-income families, senior citizens, and individuals with disabilities. Donald will be supervising a staff of 40 individuals that includes property managers, maintenance, security, development and rehabilitation, and social services personnel. Donald’s prior positions were director of housing management (15 years) and modernization coordinator (three years). Donald lives in Joliet, Ill.

Lee Shervheim** (’88 indus. engr., ’90 MS Indus. mfg. sys. engr.) has been appointed to the position of plant manager of the Wahpeton, N.D. Imation site, effective Sept. 1, 2007. Lee joined the Wahpeton site in June 1993 as diskette quality engineer and has had varied responsibilities since that time in operations, quality, production management and, most recently, as the site’s optimized operations, quality systems, and compliance manager. Lee has completed the Imation black bet training program and is an ASQ certified black belt. Lee’s responsibilities will include all aspects of plant performance and operations. Lee lives in Wahpeton, N.D.

Ruth (Engle) Larner** (’85 music) was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Suzuki Association of the Americas. This three-year term will oversee and support activities of Suzuki music teachers throughout North, South, and Central America. Ruth lives in Ft. Collins, Colo.

Peri Van Tassel* (’84 French) has returned to Iowa as of January 2007, after 22 years of teaching high school French & German. Peri is now a UniServ Director for the Iowa State Education Association (ISEA) – the state branch of the NEA (National Education Association). Peri lovess living in Des Moines, meeting other ISU alums, and participating in cultural and sporting events in Ames.

Clay Anderson* (’83 aero. engr.) is the first Iowa State alumnus to live onboard the International Space Station. Clay lives in Houston, Texas.

Allen Johnson** (’80 ag. bus.) accepted a position of associate vice president – investments with Wachovia Securities in Mesa, Ariz., in July 2006. Allen continues to retain CFP (certified financial planner) designation. Allen lives in Chandler, Ariz.

Kristen (Kerns) Wheeler ** ('91 leisure stds.) was selected to receive the James Beard Foundation's Chef Mavro award. A scholarship which is given to a deserving student enrolled in the culinary arts program at Kapiolani Community College, Honolulu, HI.
