In 2014 I started working with a couple of other ISU alumni, (Thomas Sawyer TCA 1983, Keven Siegert TCA 1984) on a series of documentaries about rural, generational Irish pubs, run by families for 90 to 155 years. Since we started the project, a couple of us have retired and we have leaned into the project a little more, and are now working on our sixth show. These shows, A Proper Pint (https://www.aproperpintfilm.com/), are part of the In Flight Entertainment system on Aer Lingus flights, so they will be available to ISU travelers as they converge on Dublin, and other parts of Ireland, in August, and most likely into September for some. Currently playing are “Ma Murphy’s Bar” in Bantry, and Sharkey’s Bar in Annagry. In September, McDonnell’s Bar and Undertakers” will begin showing. -

Gary Ramsey

My co-author and I have just published the subject non-fiction paperback "To Be The Best By Any Measure" which became available on Amazon and all major bookseller sites on March 7. Virtually all of our early readers agree that this book should be a must-read for all managers, business students, and those aspiring to be future leaders. And who is Pat Magee? That is the name which appeared on my original birth certificate. When only 3 days old, during the early months of World War Two, I was adopted by the Ramsey family and given my current name. However, it wasn't until nearly 80 years later that the Iowa legislature finally passed a law opening up adoption records. Only then was I able to obtain a copy of that original birth certificate and identify my actual biological parents. -

There is always an interesting result with sports teams when you hold open tryouts. That is true for the Cedar Valley CourtKings, the new minor league basketball team in Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Iowa, which will play its inaugural season in the new Midwest Basketball League. Matt Craft, a 37-year-old lawyer in Waterloo, showed up for the first open tryout in January. He played well enough that the team invited him back for a second look at tryout number two. After the 3rd and final open tryout, the CourtKings extended a player agreement contract to Craft. Matt played his high school basketball at Union High School in LaPorte City and then went to Iowa State and went through the walk on tryouts. “The players all have different goals and reasons for wanting to play for a team like this and Matt is no different. He just wants to be part of this new team and help us in anyway he can whether it is at practice, at home games or filling in on a road trip if needed.” said owner/GM Gary Rima. “He is like a player/coach for us, and I am excited to have Matt be part of this organization.” The Cedar Valley CourtKings open up the season Saturday, April 23 in Chicago against the Chicago Clovers. The Clovers have replaced Sioux City in the MBL for the inaugural season. The CourtKings will play their home opener on Sunday, May 15, hosting the Minnesota Broncos from St. Paul. -

I am an Ames native who studied pre-med at Iowa State 1956-59. I'm a life member of the ISU Alumni Association. I am announcing my retirement from 52 years of practicing general medicine and psychiatry since graduation from the U of I med school in 1963! After internship at LA County General Hospital I then served two years in the US Navy as a general medical officer in Vietnam and in San Francisco followed by psychiatric residency at Stanford University, completed in 1972. Subsequently I moved back to San Francisco where I have combined solo private practice with volunteer teaching as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Univ of California San Francisco (UCSF) medical school these many years. I have also served as Presidents of the San Francisco Medical Society, of the Northern California Psychiatric Society, and of the Association of the Clinical Faculty at UCSF where I've received several teaching, community service and clinical awards. Along the way I have also published three book chapters and over fifty articles, essays and editorials in various journals. I've enjoyed visiting Ames and Iowa State frequently over these many years and plan to continue that practice. I like to think this Iowa farm boy has done ok in the Big City of San Francisco over this long career in medicine. Greetings to old friends and classmates from Ames and ISU! Dr Steve Walsh -

May 2015 will mark 10 years since I got my MBA at ISU. Now, 10 years later, our daughter, Emily, will be graduating from ISU with 2 degrees. One is in Finance and the other in Accounting. (Steve and I tried to convince her to get one B.S. and get a Master’s during that 4th year, but to no avail.) Also, Steve looks like he will be graduating the same day as Emily with his Ph.D. from ABE after a very intense 2 years all while working full-time. He is slated to do his defense this week. In addition, 2 weeks after graduation from ISU, Emily will be getting married to another May 2015 graduate from the College of Business whose parents are both ISU graduates. The wedding reception will be held at the Alumni Center. -

Vincent Lowenberg
Posted on October 28, 2014 in Miscellaneous
Vincent A. Lowenberg September 15, 1926- July 7, 2014 Vincent A. Lowenberg was born in Donnellson Iowa on September 15, 1926 to Viola (Krehbiel) and Herbert Lowenberg. He had one sister Elaine (Lowenberg) Harper and 83 first cousins…some of them were double first cousins. Vince loved his large family and kept great correspondence throughout the years Vince married Tyra Elisabeth (Lisa) Lindahl on August 26, 1961 at Ekero Church on an island in Stockholm’s archipelago. The church was built in 1106, and it stands close to where the King and Queen live today. They were married 52 years and have 3 children Karin, Robert, and Kirsten, and 6 grandchildren. Our dad grew up in Donnellson, where he sang in the church choir, was on the high school basketball team, and even played the clarinet in a Dixie Land jazz band. After High School dad went to Iowa State University for two years before signing up to serve his country in the Navy during World War ll. After the war, Dad returned to school, and graduated from the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, he sang with the Men’s Glee Club (the oldest in the Nation), and 2 months ago, the men from the current Michigan Men’s Glee Club honored him with a private concert on the lawn in front of his home in Lake Oswego. Approximately 20 years ago, dad declined an Honorary Doctorate to teach in the Department of Economics with the University of Michigan. After graduation, Dad moved to Boston and earned his MBA from Harvard Business School. Vince worked as an Economist and Consultant for a number of companies including Stanford Research Institute (SRI), The United Nations, and USAID. Dad travelled the world for SRI, and his longest assignments allowed him to move his family to Sweden for a year, and to Ethiopia for two years. Eventually, the family moved to a small farm in Lake Oswego, Oregon where mom and dad lived for 40 years together. From that home base, Dad accepted a twelve month assignment with the United Nations in Zambia, and an eighteen month assignment with the US State Department in Cairo, Egypt. Dad was also a long time member of the Bohemian Club in San Francisco which allowed him long time friendships in business and life. He deeply enjoyed the “Grove” in the summers…writing and preforming music and plays with the other members. The Redwoods were always one of his favorite places to be. The farm in Lake Oswego was our dad’s big love. He could spend hours in his amazing garden, pick fruit from the orchard, or tend to the various animals we had on the farm. He spent countless hours teaching his children the value of hard work by example and word, because he knew that hard work builds great character. Our dad loved the adventure of life and had a passion to see the world. In his 87 years he was able to travel to over 137 countries- and the family accompanied him to 41 of them. Of all of Dad’s accomplishments and adventures, none compared to his love for the Lord. He was very involved in the Gideons International, and would take every opportunity to pass out a Bible. Wherever he was traveling to, he would make sure he filled one briefcase with bibles in the language of the country he was going to be in.…even if it was Communist Russia (in the 1980’s) or Communist China. Dad was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. We will miss him terribly. We are thankful for all the amazing memories and adventures, and we are exceptionally thankful that we will be together again in Eternity. We love you dad! Contributions in Vincent A. Lowenberg's name can be made to any 3 of the following organizations: Gideon's International (gideons.org) Samaritans Purse (samaritanspurse.org) Lake Oswego United Methodist Church -

Glen Reeser
Posted on October 24, 2014 in Miscellaneous
Glen was born in Denison, Iowa, son of Glen Reeser, Sr., and Leona (Kremin) (Reeser) Mack. In 1975, he wed college classmate Martha Bell of Fairfield, Iowa. After graduating with a degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University, he began his professional career in 1976 with a position at Motorola, Inc. in Schaumburg, Illinois. Glen's early career focused on designing emergency radio equipment to transmit medical data from ambulances to emergency room doctors, which at the time was adopted as the standard across the country. Mid- career, he undertook two overseas assignments with Motorola, in Taunusstein, Germany, and in Malahide, Ireland. Each was memorable not only for the work accomplished but also for the many friendships formed. In the latter part of his career he designed electronic components, garnering 26 U.S. patents for his innovative and creative work. The Motorola components division was sold to CTS Corporation, a manufacturer of components where Glen worked for an additional 13 years before retiring from CTS as a senior technical engineer in 2011. In the last two decades of his life, Glen was deeply devoted to artistic pursuits, including metalworking and, especially, ceramics. In 2013, he was honored with a one-man ceramics exhibition at the Fairfield (Iowa) Arts and Convention Center. He was a longtime participant in the ceramics program at Harper College in Palatine, IL, and found there a circle of friends with the same interest. In June of this year, the ceramics studio at Harper College was dedicated as the Glen O. Reeser Ceramics Studio. Glen is survived by his wife Martha Bell and by two sisters, Jean Lance of Dow City, Iowa, and Mary Jo Peter of Charter Oak, Iowa. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Dorothy Bell, by his brothers-in-law David Bell, Scott Bell, Jim Peter, Larry Allen, and Jim Hulbert, his sisters-in-law Sue Ellen Bell and Mary Bell, and by many loving nieces and nephews. Although Glen and Martha had no children, the couple hosted many international exchange students through Rotary International and privately , and so he is also survived by Prajna Desai, Thomas Ferrard, Hector Cabrera Farjat, Anna Hunke, Danielle Hartman, and Silke Punzenberger Buettinghaus along with their families. He was predeceased by his parents and by a sister, Jackie Bukacek. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Glen Reeser Arts Fund at the Harper College Educational Foundation, 1200 Algonquin Road, Palatine, IL 60067. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 20th, 2014 from 4:00PM until the time of the Service of Remembrance at 8:00PM at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Highway, Palatine, IL. Services will also be held on Saturday, August 23rd, 2014 with visitation from 10:00AM until the time of the funeral service at 11:00AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Fairfield, 200 S. Main Street, Fairfield, Iowa. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, Iowa. -

James Schmeling, B.A., Political Science '97, is a contributing author to a policy report that details what the authors describe as a “historic opportunity” related to the potential for public and private sector collaboration in support of veterans and their families. The report, “A National Veterans Strategy: The Economic, Social and Security Imperative,” brings together academic research with contributions from a broad cross-section of public and private sector stakeholders, to develop a logical and researched case for the social, economic and security-based interests served by a whole-of-the-nation National Veterans Strategy. The call to action suggested by the report comes at a pivotal moment in the U.S. The approaching end of a decade of war and the associated military force reduction of more than one million individuals-when considered in the context of a challenged economy, uncertain fiscal environment and dynamic global security situation-serve to focus politicians and policymakers alike on opportunities and challenges associated with advancing the post-service life course of veterans and their families. This publication is a collaborative effort of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF) and the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism (INSCT) at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and College of Law. Schmeling, managing director and co-founder of IVMF, was extensively quoted by the Washington Post in their coverage of the National Veterans Strategy. http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/federal_government/veterans-programs-should-be-overseen-by-o… Principal authors of the report are Nicholas J. Armstrong, M.P.A., Ph.D. Candidate (INSCT) and Dr. J. Michael Haynie, Ph.D. (IVMF). Contributing authors include Daniel Savage, M.P.P. (IVMF); James Schmeling, J.D. (IVMF); William Banks, J.D., M.A. (INSCT); and VADM (Ret.) Robert Murrett, M.A. (INSCT). -

ESCAPE TO FREEDOM A Story of Survival, Dreams, Betrayals, and Accomplishments by Henry A. Fribourg, Iowa State University, PhD 1954 An e-book available on Kindle Escape to Freedom is the autobiographical memoir of a 12-year old French Jewish boy who with his parents, sister and baby brother, escaped from occupied Europe in January 1942, one month after Pearl Harbor. His mother had had premonitions of the coming Holocaust (Shoah) and needed to convince her husband to leave the Old World to give their children another chance at life, even when her parents opposed her departure. He relates surviving three machine-gun strafings by a German fighter pilot, the walk of his soldier father most of the way across France, and the flight of his pregnant mother and sister with him to escape the German Panzers during the invasion of France in 1940. He describes the life in Vichy France and North Africa, and his expulsion from school; how it felt when the neutral ship on which he was sailing on the way to refuge in Cuba was stopped by a U-boat mid-way across the Atlantic; his learning Spanish and English the hard way; the murder of his grandparents – and the life his family created in the US after WW II. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. Working his way through college, he had a 48-year career as a professor of crop ecology and as a successful pasture and beef cattle researcher. He married and had two children with his wife Claudia, who also had escaped Europe with her family as a very young child. He describes travelling widely to attend professional meetings and to help developing countries, while also visiting tourist venues, in Europe, the Americas and the Far East. Claudia accompanied him after the children were grown. When they were home, they spent several years building, on weekends, a log cabin vacation home on a lakeside hill with an unimpeded view of East Tennessee mountains. Genealogical research allowed him to identify numerous members of his extended family who did not survive the Holocaust. His grandmother had taken refuge in 1942 in a small town in the mountains of central France, where she was arrested by the Schutzstaffel (SS) in spring 1943 and shipped in train Convoy 72 to Auschwitz. Sixty years later, the inhabitants of the town honored her memory, and that of other victims, in a moving ceremony of remembrance, with several survivors and descendants present. This tale is a fascinating story of fortuitous luck and dogged determination to survive and create a fulfilling new life in America. Thoughout his book, he reminds his readers to not forget, but remember the events in Europe from 1933 through 1945. Available on Kindle (Amazon), 2013. $3.98 How Mother Gave Us Life TWICE Some of you may have some interest in what I have been doing after retirement 11 years ago. Regards, Henry A. Fribourg, Ph. D. Patrick Reed

Patrick H. Reed, superintendent of Mammoth Cave National Park, a 42-year career veteran of the National Park Service, will retire on June 30, 2012. Reed’s management style includes the phrase, “let’s help each other succeed,” used as a suggestion to park partners and a firm instruction to park staff. Reed is well known for his strong communication skills and sincere interest in community engagement. During his time at Mammoth Cave, Reed built strong and open partnerships with neighbors, universities, park support groups, cave enthusiasts, and elected officials. Through partnerships, Reed and his staff greatly multiplied the effectiveness and reach of the park’s budget and message: • With Western Kentucky University, the Mammoth Cave International Center to Science and Learning grew as a joint project in collaborative karst research and learning. • With the Friends of Mammoth Cave National Park, Reed worked with park advocates to create a nonprofit organization to raise private funds for needed projects, and support education, resource protection and management goals. • With Western Kentucky University, sister parks were established in China and Slovenia, giving Mammoth Cave an international reach and exchanging science-based management concepts with other world-renowned karst centers. • With the Barren River Area Development District, tourism agencies and chambers of commerce, Reed furthered the NPS mission by promoting sustainable use of parklands and environmentally-friendly economic development. • With trail user groups, Reed spearheaded the Comprehensive Trail Management Plan, making the backcountry accessible to hikers, mountain bikers, and horse users. • With the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition, the park gained a partner in the Department of Energy-Clean Cities, which funded new alternative fuel vehicles for the park. Several large projects came to fruition under Reed’s tenure at Mammoth Cave, including replacement of the six-mile cave lighting system, installation of the park water system, construction of the Mammoth Cave RR Bike&Hike Trail, and planning for rehabilitation of the Green River Ferry. And, construction of the rehabilitated visitor center is near completion. Considered a legacy project, the new visitor center, funded through Recreation Fees and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will serve Mammoth Cave visitors for the next 40 years. Reed was recognized in 2009 as the National Park Service Superintendent of the Year for Natural Resource Stewardship, and in 2006 as the Southeast Region Superintendent of the Year. Reed began his career at Mt. Rushmore National Monument (S.D.) as a seasonal maintenance worker in 1969 while still a college student. After becoming a permanent employee in 1970 he was consistently promoted to positions of increasing complexity and responsibility: • Intake Trainee, Grand Teton National Park, Wyo. (1970 – 1971) • Urban Intake Trainee, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, Mo. (1972) • Office Services Ranger, Death Valley National Park, Calif. (1973) • Sub-District Ranger, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Calif. (1974) • Management Assistant, Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, Mo. (1975 – 1978) • District Ranger, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, N.C. (1978 – 1983) • District Ranger, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colo. (1983 – 1986) • Chief Ranger, Natchez Trace Parkway, Miss./Ala./Tenn. (1986 – 1991) • Superintendent, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Tenn./Ga. (1991 – 2005). Reed transferred to Mammoth Cave in January 2006, from Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park (Tenn. /Ga.), where he served as superintendent for 14 years. Reed is a native of Iowa and a 1971 graduate of Iowa State University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Resource Development for Outdoor Recreation, and a 1967 graduate of North Mahaska High School in New Sharon, Iowa. Mammoth Cave is the eleventh park for Reed and Darit, his wife of 37 years. They have two married daughters, Shannon McDonald in Georgia, DJ Keally in Colorado, and three grandsons ages three to thirteen. The Reeds plan to move to the front range of Colorado and spend quality time with their grandkids, travel and volunteer. -

Having passed the point of theoretical economic self-sufficiency (prior to the last fateful 18 months) I left my clinical practice of rehabilitation medicine in Spokane WA, (our current home) to assume the role of Research Professor at Washington State University, where I direct the National Aquatics and Sports Medicine Institute. We research the physiology of injury and recovery, as well as health maintenance. I am really enjoying this career change. I have been blessed with a number of large grants to support this activity, and it is exciting to watch the lab grow. I love working inside another land-grant university, even though Washington State has achieved about as much football success as ISU. My wife and I achieved grandparenthood through the birth of our first grandson, born to our youngest last September. Our daughter, the oldest is expecting in June 2010. We remain very active recreators, biking, camping, canoeing, rafting and skiing all in the appropriate seasons and I swim with a master's swim club. I have very fond memories of my days in Ames and 237 Ash. We have several Cyclones as good friends, but I have sorely missed keeping up with most of my college friends and would very much welcome news from former friends. Bruce beckerb@wsu.edu -

Mark D. Sorenson** ('85 fin.) has wrapped up another Red Ribbon Dinner & Great Art Auction, a fund raiser for AIDS Project Quad Cities. This year marked the 15th Annual event supporting the agency in it's 21st year of existence. The all volunteer effort this year raised a record $109,000.00 before expenses which are on track to be less than 20%! This year marked a change in the date of the event, a change in venue and a change in the type of entertainment proffered at evenings end. The art and other auction items available to the patrons out shown anything seen in the past. A survey was distributed that evening and all the responses received to date are highly complimentary of everything that changed, especially the locale and the singer who provided entertainment. Planning begins again in March for the 16th Annual Red Ribbon Dinner... if you want to be a part of a great event benefiting a very worthy cause, contact the AIDS Project Quad Cities office at (309) 762-5433 and tell them you saw this on Cy-Space! Or for more information contact Mark directly at MarkS@MarksPage.com, or visit the agency's website at www.AIDSProjectQC.org. -
