Class Notes

After graduating from Iowa State University in 1970 I went on to the University of Iowa and obtained a Law Degree in 1973. Since then, I have been practicing law in Richmond, Va.

I am wondering if there are any ISU graduates in this community who lived in Knapp House, Friley Hall with me from 1966-1970. Jerry Lutkenhaus

Eric Koppelman ('95 advertising) is currently serving as SVP, Sales & Customer Service for Seattle Chocolate Company, one of the fastest growing Natural/Organic food companies in the country. Over the course of his career, Eric has developed a unique expertise in leading venture-capital funded natural/organic food companies in high-growth environments and positioning them for acquisition by Fortune 500 food companies. Eric is also the Founder and Executive Director of Swim For A Cure, a non-profit organization created to generate funds in support of Multiple Sclerosis research. After being diagnosed with MS several years ago he turned to swimming as an alternative to running or bicycling to stay in shape. Today, Eric enters long-distance, open-water swim races around the country in an effort to gather support for the cause. Jon Sevald ('02 Community & Regional Planning) and Julia (Henderson) Sevald ('02 Accounting, '02 Business Management) are the proud parents of their first child, Ethan, born September 10, 2006. The couple resides in Champlin, MN.

Kathryn Robertson ('05 graphic design) and Curtis Hammer ('02 electrical engineering) were married on October 7, 2006 at the Indianola Heights Evangelical Free church in Des Moines, Pastor Brent Thomas officiating. A reception followed at the Hotel Fort Des Moines. The parents of the couple are William and Gayle Robertson of Moores Hill, Indiana and Robert and Diane Hammer of Des Moines. The maid of honor was Amanda Robertson; the bridesmaids were Audrey Baye and Michelle Wiese. The best man was Aaron Birkland; the groomsmen were Jeff and Bret Hammer. Kathryn is a graphic designer at the Iowa State University Foundation in Ames. Curtis is an electrical engineer at ALMACO in Nevada. After a honeymoon in Hawaii, the couple resides in Nevada.

Howard D. Anderson** (’88 mgmt.) of Three Rivers Hospitality, Chanhassen, Minn., was elected president of the Minnesota Lodging Association at its annual meeting at Grand View Lodge in Nisswa, Minn. Howard lives in Excelsior, Minn.

Dan Thomson* (’99 animal sci., ’00 DVM) has been presented the Kansas State University Distinguished Service Award. Dan is an assistant professor of clinical sciences at K-State’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Members of the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association give the award to a faculty member at the college who has given outstanding clinical and diagnostic service. Dan lives in Riley, Kan.

Marsha Peterson* (’04 accounting, ’06 MS) has been named CEO of Habitat for Humanity Iowa. Marsha lives in Ankeny.

Byron Sleugh* (’97 MS crop production, ’99 Ph.D. agronomy) is a product technology specialist for the vegetation management group within the U.S. specialties division of Dow AgroSciences in Indianapolis. He was previously an associate professor in the Department of Agriculture at Western Kentucky University.

Suzanna de Baca ** (’86 art & design) is the featured finance writer for Reed Business Information’s new online magazine, Expertbusinesssource.com. Based in Des Moines, Suzanna will write “The Financial Blueprint” three times a week. A financial adviser, Suzanna is the founder and owner of Private Capital Solutions Group.

Robert Antol** (’78 math.) and his wife, Barb, have added a 16-foot observatory dome to their home in Poughquag, N.Y. The observatory is called “Stargate 4173 at Grimaldi Tower.” Bob is a senior programmer for IBM. He has been interested in astronomy for more than 40 years.

William Chilton ** (’76 architecture), managing principal at Pickard Chilton architectural firm headquartered in New Haven, Conn., was featured recently along with his business partner and fellow Iowa Stater Jon Pickard (’76 architecture) in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Pickard Chilton designed the award-winning 1180 Peachtree building in Midtown Atlanta, and the firm is planning a 350,000-square-foot headquarters for Newell Rubbermaid in Sandy Springs as well as a 40-plus-story tower in downtown Atlanta, the tallest structure built there in more than a decade. Chilton and Pickard have done extensive design work in Atlanta since the 1990s.

Mary Dodds Schlick ** (’47 household equip.) has just published her latest book, Coming to Stay: A Columbia River Journey, published by the University of Washington Press along with the Oregon Historical Society Press. Mary is also the author of Columbia River Basketry: Gift of the Ancestors, Gift of the Earth. A master artist in the Oregon Traditional Arts Program, Mary received an Oregon Governor’s Arts Award in 1998. She lives in Mt. Hood, Oregon.

Tim Quick* ('01 mktg. & international bus.) has been named assistant vice president and business development officer for Bank of the West branch locations in West Des Moines and Waukee. In this role, Tim is responsible for building and developing relationships with business clients in West Des Moines. There are 47 Bank of the West locations in Iowa, and 12 in Des Moines and surrounding communities.

Jeffrey W. Miller* ('83 dsn.) is currently working as an account representative for Woolverton Printing Company in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Jeff has two daughters, aged 16 and 14, and lives in Waterloo, Iowa.

Deborah (Benson) Ashby* ('73 dietetics; '06 fam. con. sci) has been a clinical dietitian at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center for 32 years, 20 of which she has spent as Chief Clinical Dietitian. Deborah has mentored dietetic interns from ISU for 11 years. "So when the opportunity to earn a MFCS presented itself, I seized the chance to increase my skills in my profession and to give back to that," she writes. "Lifelong learning is rewarding, continuous, energizing, awesome, and achievable." Deborah lives in Gilman, Iowa.

John Parry Dodds** (’39 ag. econ., ’40 MS, ’51 Ph.D.) and wife, Barbara (Degen) Dodds** (’49 MS psych.) write: “We are in a “continuing care ‘home,’ and the politics are as rabid as the class of ’39 in college…except there aren’t any fraternities.” John and Barbara live in Fresno, Calif.

Wayne Maley** (’49 ag. engr.) is calling it a “second retirement, if you will,” after working with the international office of ASABE (American Society of Agricultural and Biological/Engineers). Wayne has completed several consulting projects, including helping develop the Retired Engineers Technical Assistance Program in Michigan. Wayne and his wife, Marianne, have moved to Las Cruces, N.M., and hope to do more writing in the warmer desert climate.

Robert Arthur** (’40 animal sci.) and his wife, Jean (Kachelhoffer) Arthur** (’39 home ec. ed.), 89, live in Milford, Iowa, during the winter and in Spirit Lake, Iowa, during the summer. They have a daughter who is an ISU grad in interior design; Mary Arthur is now an artist in Massachusetts. Robert specialized in beef cattle and was a buyer for John Morrell in northwest Iowa for 24 years.

Ruth (Warye) Clark** (’40 dietetics) was a hospital dietitian for 33 years and is enjoying retirement. Ruth and her husband, Glenn, moved from their home to Calvin Community in Des Moines, Iowa, two years ago.

David H. Anderson** (’56 journalism) has written a book, How to Tame Parkinson’s by Keeping Fit. Information about the book and what readers are saying about David’s personal story can be found on his Web site at www.tamingparkinsons.com. David lives in Sarasota, Fla.

Wayne G. Johnson* (’54 engr.) is emeritus professor of philosophy at the University of Wisconsin – Parkside. He published “Morality: Does ‘God’ Make a Difference” in 2005. Wayne lives in Racine, Wis.

Don Arends** (’52 ag journalism) is an experienced scuba diver, writer and grandfather to 28 grandchildren in three combined families. His children’s books are designed to encourage bedtime reading, including content focused on helping expand children’s knowledge of sea life through fun adventure with happy endings. His newest book is Grandpa Grouper, the Fish with Glasses. Don lives in Oak Brook, Ill.

Duane Acker** (’52 animal sci., ’53 MS) is the author of the book, Can State Universities be Managed? Duane earned two degrees from Iowa State and later served on its faculty. From Iowa State, he moved on to administrative posts at several universities and for 11 years was president at Kansas State University. He now holds a collaborative professorship in Iowa State’s Animal Science department. Duane lives in Atlantic, Iowa.
