Class Notes

Daniel (Dan) Krieger** (’59 indus. ad.) was named recipient of the 2008 Iowa Bankers Association James A. Leach Leadership Award. The award was created in 2000, following former Congressman Jim Leach’s term as Chairman of the U.S. House Banking Committee, to honor Iowa bankers for outstanding service to the financial services industry. Dan is past president of the Iowa Bankers Association (IBA), past board member of the American Bankers Association (ABA), and past chairman of the ABA Community Bankers Council. He has also served as president of the ISU Alumni Association and has led many Ames-area community organizations. Dan and his wife live in Ames, Ia.

Bruce Rasmussen* (’58 gen. sci.) retired December 31, 2006, after being in private practice in ophthalmology in San Diego, Calif. since 1982. After graduating from ISU, he was a Line Officer, USN until 1963, when he enrolled in medical school at the University of Kansas. He was a Medical Officer, USN, in ophthalmology from 1967 until he retired with the rank of Captain. He and his wife Patricia live in San Diego and have three children, Lisa, Stephanie, and Scott, and seven grandchildren.

Ray Andrews, Jr.* (’57 civil engr.), owner and CEO of Andrews Prestressed Concrete, Inc. in Clear Lake, Iowa, has been elected a Fellow of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI). PCI elects a limited number of its members as Fellows to recognize their outstanding contributions to the precast concrete structures industry and to PCI. Ray entered the precast concrete structures industry in 1957 and became a licensed professional engineer in both Iowa and Minnesota. He joined the business begun by his father, where he began overseeing operations. Today, the company produces a variety of precast concrete components for building projects as well as for bridge structures. Ray resides in Clear Lake.

H. Dann Wallis** (’56 indus. engr.) was appointed to the Florida Board of Professional Engineers, to serve from October, 2008, through October, 2011. He holds a Professional engineer license in Florida, Texas, and Iowa. Dann’s first novel, "Burnin’ Daylight," an adventure story set during the early days of the Civil War, was published in 2005.

Ruth (Furst) (Johnson) Gustafson* (’54 home ec. ed.) is spending several months with her two daughters in Michigan and Texas until June, when she will return to her home in Springfield, Ohio, where her son also lives. She recalls living with her husband Robert (’54 farm op.) and their three children in Pammel Court. They enjoyed life in the quonset and their neighbors in Pammel Court. VEISHEA was also one of their favorite activities while at Iowa State.

James L. “Jim” Champlin** (’54 mech. engr.) is Chairman of The National Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) Memorial fund drive currently underway to raise $250,000 from individuals and corporate sponsors. Charles Lindbergh’s grandson, Eric Lindbergh, is Honorary Co-Chairman. The memorial is to be built at the March Field Air Museum, Riverside, Calif. and will be dedicated at the 2010 DFC National Convention in Riverside. Jim is also Chairman of this event. The DFC award honors heroism or outstanding achievement in flight, with most of its recipients earning it in battle or while in uniform. Jim resides in Riverside, Calif. and still substitute teaches in the Moreno Valley school system.

Clarence Robert White** (’50 elec. engr.) worked for twenty years in various aspects of the electrical utility business. He ran his own consulting engineer business from 1970 until 1997. He has lived in Cedar Rapids since 1954 and has survived the floods of 1993 and 2008. He and his wife Phyllis enjoy traveling (29 countries) and tending three acres on the edge of Cedar Rapids. They have a son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren who are all ISU students or graduates.

Gaylen A. Thurston* (’50 civil engr.) has authored several papers on nonlinear column theory. Alumni who are interested in reading them may contact gaylenthur@aol.com Gaylen lives in Centennial, Colo.

Harold Reihman** (’50 engr.) now lives in Richmond, Ind. He retired as vice-president of Ford Motor Company in 1991. He helped pioneer the design and development of the aluminum radiator, air conditioning condenser, and heater core for Ford automobiles.

Richard J. Raymond* (’50 elec. engr.) retired in 1997 after thirty years of electrical engineering consulting work with municipal utilities and industrial power systems. He has been a licensed private pilot for 47 years, and is now building his own plane. He resides in Worthington, Minn.

James Pint** (’49 chem. engr., ’55 MS math) and his wife Betty celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 5, 2008. They have four children: Rebecca, Ellen, Sheila, and Bruce. James worked as a quality engineer from 1955 to 1987 and retired from Goodyear Tire. He and Betty have attended 160 domestic Elderhostels, with at least one in all fifty states. They also attended 24 weeks of international Elderhostels from 1985 to 20007. They reside in Akron, Ohio.

George Burnet** (’48 chem. engr., ’49 MS, ’51 PhD) and Agatha Huepenbecker Burnet** (’56 MS text. & cloth.) are enjoying townhouse living at the Green Hills Retirement Community in Ames. George’s time at Iowa State is spent almost entirely in alumni relations and development. He says it is always great to hear from former students and colleagues.

Alfred “Al” Hausrath* (’47 engr.) and Mary Elizabeth “Mel” (Lush) Hausrath* (’46 food sci.) moved to California in 1958 “so Al could be a rocket scientist,” and they have loved living there, especially near the ocean. They “love the Los Angeles scene, where ideas thrive and the privileged and the not so privileged meet daily. 158 different languages are spoken and maybe as many religions exist. The frontier spirit thrives.” They reside in Palos Verdes Estates, and their three children and their families live within an hour’s drive.

Mary Helen (Merriam) Stewart (’41 chem.) was a delegate to the 29th Triennial Convention of Iota sigma Pi, Honor Society for Women in Chemistry, held last summer. She notes that many of the women involved had Iowa State connections, including Patricia Thiel, distinguished professor of chemistry at ISU, who received the award of National Honorary Member. This is the highest honor that Iota Sigma Pi bestows on women chemists. Mary Helen lives in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Douglas B. McKeag received his medical degree from Michigan State University in 1973 and is currently Chairman of the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Family Medicine. He is also head team physician at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), and served as a professional consultant to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Committee.

Carol Pugsley received $45 and 2nd Place Award for her Cabbage Rose painting with collage mat at the Carlsbad Area Art Association’s March, 2008 Art Exhibit. Carol lives in Carlsbad, N.M.

Jennifer (Thiede) Theneman married Ross Theneman in Ames, Iowa on Saturday, October 27, 2007. We took pictures on the Iowa State Campus, married at St. Paul Lutheran Church and reception was at the renovated Knapp-Storms Dining Complex. We honeymooned in Hawaii, and reside in Mankato, Minnesota with our puppy, Zoey.

Allie Yungclas (LAS '99) and Mike Bartosch (St. Cloud Univ. '98) will be married August 30, 2008 in Webster City, IA. Mike is a detective in the Madison area, and Allie is an assistant professor, and teaches the police academy in Madison. Allie and Mike reside in Evansville, WI with their cats and a dog.

I recently retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and now reside in Anaheim, California. I am now a project manager with J.R. Abbott Construction Company from Seattle, Washington. I have been transferred to the Los Angeles office where I am currently building hospitals in Glendale and in Simi Valley.

I accepted a position as a Graphic Designer at Drake University in September of 2007. I ran my first half-marathon during the Drake Relays in April of 2008. On a side note--in June of 2007, shortly after graduating, I met my graphic design hero along with fellow Alum, Kelly Leaman.
