Kadence Marie Streck was born on Monday September 14, 2009 at 12:44 in the afternoon at St Lukes Hospital in Sioux City, IA. She weighed 6 lbs 13 ounces and measured 18 inches long. She was welcomed home by her Dad and Mom, Grant and Brianne Streck of Moville, IA

Sydney Marie Zupke was born August 5, 2009. Proud parents are Ryan & Ann Zupke. She joins big brothers Nathan & Colton.

William Quick** ('93 civ. engr.) is one of fifty-five attorneys selected as 2009 "Up and Coming Lawyers" by "Missouri Lawyers Weekly," the state's premiere legal newspaper. The attorneys were chosen from lawyers across the state of Missouri based on their legal qualifications and commitment to the community. William is a partner in the business department of the Polsinelli Shugart law firm in Kansas City. He lives in Leawood, Kan.

Michael Skahill '83 of is the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Smithfield Foods International Group. Mike and his wife, Joanne, live in Williamsburg, Virginia. Mike's daughter, Madeline, attends Wake Forest University. Mike has one other child, Connor, who is a sophmore and Williamsburg's Walsingham Academy

The Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust has granted James Schmeling at the Burton Blatt Institute $35,000 as Principal Investigator and the William Bingham Foundation has granted Schmeling as $50,000 as PI, to continue BBI's partnership with the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University to conduct its Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV). The EBV offers cutting-edge, experiential training in small business management and entrepreneurship to U.S. military veterans disabled as a result of their service to their country. The EBV program was founded in the Whitman School at Syracuse University in 2007 and has since expanded to the Anderson School of Management at UCLA, Florida State University’s College of Business, the Mays Business School at Texas A&M and the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University. Sponsorship of BBI supports the institute’s work with each of the five participating universities related to the disability components of the program. BBI provides disability-related curriculum, training and resources for veterans enrolled in the program at each campus. BBI staff and partners deliver training, benefit planning and consultation to the participating veterans before, during and after each session to assist them in making informed decisions about business goals and business incentives and resources available to entrepreneurs with disabilities or employers that hire workers with disabilities. The program provides information to veterans about disability benefits and incentives available to them to facilitate business start-up, including tax credits and deductions available to hire and accommodate other disabled veterans when businesses grow. BBI will apply its expertise as a problem solver and innovator in the advancement of employment goals for individuals with disabilities to the community of veterans who pursue self-employment. Both the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust and the William Bingham Foundations’s support for this program allows BBI to continue to work at the intersection of disability, veteran’s issues and self-employment. Schmeling is Chief Operating Officer of the Burton Blatt Institute, and earned his BA from Iowa State University and his JD from The University of Iowa College of Law. BBI fosters public-private dialogue to advance the civic, economic and social participation of persons with disabilities in a global society. The institute takes its name from Burton Blatt (1927–85), a pioneer in humanizing services for people with disabilities. BBI currently has offices in Syracuse; New York City; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; and Tel Aviv.

Shawn Blaesing-Thompson (ISU'97), Joseph Thompson (UNL'98) and big sister Abigail welcomed Joshua Joseph to our family in March 2009. He is a happy healthy little guy and a joy to have in our family. The family lives in Ames Iowa after being in Washington state for ten year until 2008.

Shawn Blaesing-Thompson moved September 2009 from a position with the USDA-ARS on the ISU campus, up the road to the Iowa Department of Transportation to be the new GIS Coordinator for the Office of Maintenance. This is an exciting position where I can draw on what I learned from my many years with the Washington State DOT.

Mary Beth Heimbuch Sukup** ('75 home ec. ed.) is president of the Sheffield-Chapin-Meservey-Thornton school board in Iowa. She lives in Dougherty, Iowa

Charles Sukup** ('76 ag. engr.; '82 MS) has served as chair of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI) from 2008-2009. ABI is the largest and oldest business association in Iowa. He and his wife Mary Beth have three children, one of whom graduated from Iowa State, and another is currently enrolled at ISU.

Ellen Pieper** ('88 English) is a stroke survivor who was one of the subjects of a feature article, "Surviving Stroke," in the fall 2004 issue of VISIONS magazine. She recently completed a book about her experience, "Praise God for Tattered Dreams." It was published under the name of E. E. Laine, by Lulu.com, and is available for purchase. Ellen lives in Waukee, Iowa.

Received Ph.D. in Health Studies on May 16, 2009 from Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas.

Chad Mittelstadt ('97 mech engr) and wife Julie (Shelton) Mittelstadt ('98 land arch) along with big sister Sophie proudly announce the arrival of Nicholas Raymond on December 31, 2008. Grandparents are Raymond ('49 engr) and Marilyn Mittelstadt and Dane ('68 arch) and Christina (Craychee) Shelton ('66 mod lang). The Mittelstadt's live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Patricia (Tricia) Walker** ('00 engr. sci.) has recently returned to Ames to take a position as Client Care Manager at Jacquelyn's Photography. She is excited to be back in Cyclone country.

Roger Holck** ('69 ag. bus.) recently retired as a bank president in Grinnell, Iowa, where he resides. One day after retiring, he traveled across the world to Malawi, where he applied his decades of finance and agriculture experience to assist smallholder farmers as part of a project with CNFA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening agricultural markets and empowering entrepreneurs in the developing world. As a volunteer for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Farmer-to-Farmer Program, he worked with the owner of Green Shop, a produce store in Mzuzu, Malawi, to develop a business plan, set an annual budget, and train staff in understanding daily financial transactions and records. The Farmer-to-Farmer Program provides voluntary technical assistance to farmers, farm groups, and agribusinesses in developing and transitional countries to promote sustainable improvements in food processing, production, and marketing.

Paul Tilp* ('49 civil engr.) went to work in Colorado after graduating from ISU, married Mary Stefanich, a Colorado native, and had two children, Andy and Adreyaynn. He worked for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for 32 years in the design and construction of large water conveyance facilities (pipelines, tunnels, canals) in the western states. Projects included California Aqueduct and Central Valley (CA), Central Arizona, Columbia Basin (WA), Frying Pan - Arkansas (CO), and Southern Nevada. After retiring from USBR, Paul worked as a consultant with PRC Engineering in Indonesia for 2 1/2 years, then had short assignments in Pakistan and Ecuador. He is now retired and a professional volunteer.

Bruce H. Hamilton** ('73 ind. admin. [business]), announces that his accounting firm Hamilton CPA, LLC is celebrating 20 years serving clients in Janesville, Wisc. Started in 1989 as Hamilton Consulting, Hamilton CPA, LLC focuses on personalized client attention and on delivering value-added services. Concentrating on the entrepreneur and small business, Bruce provides a wide range of professional services, including tax planning compliance and preparation, assurance services, business consulting, and litigation support. Bruce is a former director of the Iowa State University Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, has selected Richard H. Stanley** ('55 elec. engr./mech. engr.) to receive its 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award. The award was established to recognize alumni who have demonstrated adherence to the ideals of Tau Beta Pi (integrity, breadth of interest, adaptability, and unselfish activity) and to fostering a spirit of liberal culture on local, national, and international scales. Richard is chair emeritus of the Stanley Group and director of Stanley Consultants, Inc., which provides engineering, environmental, and construction services worldwide. The Stanley Foundation, of which he is chair of the board of directors, began in 1956. The foundation has expanded to promote thought and dialogue about world affairs among multiple constituencies. It was established to foster world peace, by achieving freedom and justice built on world citizenship and effective global governance.

Neil Mulholland** ('81 indus. admin.) has been selected to serve as President and CEO of the National Park Foundation, the national charitable partner of America's 391 national parks, effective August 10, 2009. He will be the fifth person to head the National Park Foundation, which was established in 1967 to strengthen the connection between the American people and their national parks. The Foundation raises private funds, makes strategic grants, creates innovative partnerships and increases public awareness about the need and opportunity for park philanthropy.

Dale McKinney* ('75 architecture) was installed on the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards' (NCARB) Board of Directors in June, 2009. He has served the profession for many years. He was appointed to the Iowa Architecture Examiners Board in 2000 and is the board's current president, a position he also held in 2003-2004. McKinney is the founding partner of the firm that evolved into M+ Architects, located in Sioux City, Iowa. The firm is committed to design innovation and sustainability and has experience in education, recreation, office, retail, government, and adaptive reuse with an emphasis on historical preservation.

Kara McWhirter Waugh BS'95 and Barry G. Waugh of Urbandale welcomed the arrival of their son, Kerrick James Waugh, on July 7, 2009.

Lauren S. Hughes, MD, MPH, ('02 BS, Zoology and BA, Spanish) was elected as the National President of the American Medical Student Association at the 59th Annual Convention in March 2009 in Washington, DC. She will serve full-time for one year as the senior elected official for the organization before pursuing medical residency in family practice. Dr. Hughes graduated from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in May 2009 and obtained her MPH in health policy from The George Washington University in 2007. During her medical training, Lauren interned at Iowa Senator Tom Harkin's office and at the National Association of Community Health Centers, volunteered regularly at the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic, and studied abroad in Brazil, Sweden, and Tanzania. Dr. Hughes plans to practice and teach in a community health center, volunteer internationally, and enter policy and advocacy work.

Stephen C. Limkemann, PE (BSCE/1975) owns/operates SCL Consultants, an Engineering and Architectural staffing agency providing professional personnel and management services to client companies and assistance to job seeking individuals.

Lisa (Finley) McCann ('91 Chemistry) has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserve. She works as an Admissions Liaison for the Air Force Academy and AFROTC. While at Iowa State, Lisa was a member of AFROTC Det 250. She resides in Federal Way, WA

Lisa (Finley) McCann ("91 Chemistry), husband Greg, and big sister Emma welcomed James Everett McCann into their lives on April 15, 2009. The McCann family lives in Federal Way, WA.

Dan and I met our sophomore year of college on 8th floor of Larch. I was a transfer student moving in early for formal recruitment and he was the floor president living on the floor a second year and given permission to move in a little early. One afternoon during formal recruitment I started to loose my voice from talking so much and needed to make some tea. My roommate was brining the microwave and I didn't have a way to make hot water. So I walked all around the girl’s side of the floor to find a microwave I could use, but no one was around. On the guy's side there was one door open with a very handsome man watching a baseball game. I asked him if I could use his microwave and the shy guy nodded. As my water heated up, I talked the ear off my new friend. When classes began we got to know each other a bit more and often bumped into each other at the dining hall, rec center, St. Thomas church and football games. Casual run-ins developed into a really fun friendship. We spent many nights working on homework till late, only to discover that we accomplished very little because we were making too many jokes and distracting each other from getting our work done. Later that fall Dan invited me to a Halloween party. I went as cupid and he went as a lifeguard. As the party was winding down he kissed me, and as they say the rest is history.
