    Gary Whitehead ('96 english) has taught at Tenafly High School for twenty-six years, where he has advised both the newspaper and the literary journal, positions which have helped him empower students to find their writing voices, spark their creativity, learn to love literature, and develop leadership skills. Gary is a recipient of the Princeton University Distinguished Secondary School Teaching Award. Also a practicing poet, he has published four books of poetry, including A Glossary of Chickens, which was selected for the Princeton Series of Contemporary Poets and published by Princeton University Press. His writing has won many awards, including a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and his poetry has been published widely, most notably in The New Yorker. His dual career as a writer and teacher has helped him infuse his lessons with real-world teaching moments, which have inspired students at every level.

The Cicerone Certification Program empowers beer professionals worldwide by developing and recognizing beer skill and knowledge. This is the sommelier (wine) equivalent in the beer-industry sector. The master level is the highest achievement - with only 28 people in the world, ever attaining the credential. And Shelly is only one of 5 women to earn this title. Congratulations!

    Tom Marantz ('76) was recognized by Community Bankers Association of Illinois (CBAI) as the 2023 Outstanding Member of the Year. Marantz is CEO and Chairman of the Board at Bank of Springfield (BOS) and was presented with the award on behalf of his leadership and commitment to community banking. He has served on the CBAI Board since 2007 in every role including CBAI chairman and Community BancService Corporation chairman. "This award speaks volumes to the dedication of our staff", says Marantz. "Our employees have put BOS in a position of growth that allows us to continue the spirit of community banking. That's an accomplishment in itself". Tom earned his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University. During his time as a Cyclone, Tom was a varsity swimmer and earned individual and team Big 8 championships. Tom is celebrating his 44th year with the BOS this December.

    I started The Nadas in 1993 when we were both attending Iowa State. We began by playing every local bar and party we could get invited to play. We eventually made Peoples Bar and Grille our home. We have since put out dozens of live and studio albums and played thousands of live shows all over the country and abroad. Our newest record is called Come Along for the Ride. We hope you do.
